Turning 30 with grace and dignity

On Sunday I became one day older than I was on Saturday, but somehow I aged an entire decade.

Do you feel any different? I keep hearing. Well, on Sunday I was rather tired. That may, however, have something to do with the 30 odd miles we cycled in 30 degree heat, and the partying on into the evening. Having taken a few days to soak it all in, I would have to say while I'm a little thinner in some places, and a little fatter in others, a little less hairy in some, a lot more hairy in others, I'm still me, although sometimes I forget who that is.

And what have I achieved in those 30 years. Well, for one I've completed Ultima V-IX, Ultima Underworld 1 and 2, at least 10 Sierra adventures, Captain Comic (without losing a life), Warcraft 1-3, Baldur's Gate 1,2 and Dark Alliance, Diablo, Age of Empires 1 and 2, Lylat Wars, managed a gold medal in every cup on Mario Karts 64 and oh-so-many more. I've also watched more than 300 episodes of The Simpsons, some more than 10 times. And over the last 15 years I've accumulated a vast collection of comic books, which were recently valued at almost what I paid for them!

So how have I had the time to have a social life? Well... er, Mario Karts 64 is multiplayer, and I played Age of Empires 2 online against other, er, people. And lots of people have heard me laughing at The Simpsons. And I buy comic books off a person, on ebay. Surely that counts.

What else. Well, I managed to go to the same university for 11 years, and then when I thought I should grow up and move on, I went to another university. And I have travelled the world, got a great girlfriend, almost completed a PhD, got an excellent bunch of friends (none of whom can help me get past level 7 on The Frozen Throne, but hey?) and am a better person for all of it.

So do I feel any different? Well, seeing as though the first thing I did at midnight Saturday was watch two episodes of The Simpsons, probably not that much.

Comments:
Daryl, it's your birthday
God bless you this day
You gave me the gift of a friendly mister
And I'm proud of you today

Daryl, it's your birthday
Happy birthday, Daryl
Daryl, its your birthday
Happy birthday, Daryl

I wish you love and good will
I wish you praise and joy
I wish you better than your heart desires
And your trek past Dalaran

Daryl, it's your birthday
Happy birthday, Daryl
Daryl, its your birthday
Happy birthday, Lisa

Happy B'Day - atleast you're not 40 yet...

yet. . .

Something did change - noone gave you the Simpsons or a Terry Pratchett book for your birthday! Aah, end of an era - well, probably just a momentary glitch in tradition really. We had a beer and cheers to you in sunny Port Douglas. Now that you're heading toward 40, don't let your memory slip and forget to finish that PhD and get back here soon! We may not have lots of castles, but I'm sure we can whip up some of those bat cup cake thingies. Happy birthday!
