Barcelona, Montserrat and Eurostar Roma
We've well and truly left Barcelona, but I've just gotten around to updating the blog, so here goes:
Barcelona was great. I particularly recommend the Gothic quarter, and of course anything done by Gaudi - watching a massive, completely over-the-top church being constructed is quite memorable. I wouldn't recommend taking your girlfriend down a dark street whilst saying "this used to be the red light district, but they've cleaned it up" and then realising that they haven't quite finished cleaning.
We also did a day trip to Montserrat which is a really beautiful mountain with a monastery on it. You could easily spend a few days exploring the mountain and all of it's little monuments and hermitages, although we did it in a couple of hours because we had a ferry to catch.
The ferry (Eurostar Roma) from Barcelona to Civitacecchia (near Rome) seemed a bit dingy to start with, and the airline style seating that we booked looked like it came out of a decommisioned DC-10, but, we actually had a decent night's sleep and spending the morning sitting on the deck, cruising between Corsica and Sardinia (where I had one of those "now I'm in France, now I'm in Italy" kind of moments) was very relaxing.
Then onto Naples, but I'll leave that for another time.

When I went to Montserrat (oh so many years ago), i got food poisoning, so my experience was not quite as positive as yours.
keep up the blogs, I'm enjoying it! Since I've married a farmer I may never travel overseas again, so at least I can read about it!
